Brand origin
Dongya Botu was created by Lin Qingyao and Walter Kong, two fashion designers who founded the house in Hong Kong in 2017.
Lin Qingyao graduated from Central Saint Martins in London and was recognised as an outstanding emerging designer in the city. Before joining Dongya Botu, she contributed to collections and design work for internationally recognised houses including Alexander McQueen in London, John Galliano in Paris and Diane von Furstenberg in New York.
Walter Kong graduated from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and won the 2007 Hong Kong Young Fashion Designers' Contest. Years of work across mainland China and Hong Kong gave him a deep understanding of design, market needs and brand operations.
Together, their professional backgrounds and design languages formed the distinctive aesthetic of Dongya Botu.
Brand philosophy
The artistic philosophy of Dongya Botu draws from the pioneering spirit and distinctive taste of the eighteenth-century art movements. We bring that spirit into modern clothing, looking for a balance between simplicity and individuality.
Over time, the house has developed a clear signature: minimal, natural and elegant, with a modern edge.
We do not blindly follow trends or shape every decision around the market. Through clean design and meaningful detail, we want clothing to become a true part of contemporary life.
A Hong Kong beginning
Dongya Botu opened its first boutique in Hong Kong in spring 2017. At the time, the city offered limited independent fashion choices while much of the market was shaped by large chains with similar aesthetics. We wanted to give people an alternative to conventional commercial fashion.
True fashion does not need to be complicated or exaggerated. It comes from finding the right balance between design, cut, fabric and detail.
From the start, the house has stayed independent in design, grounded in quality and guided by the real needs of the wearer. That is how its own brand language began to take shape.
Our values
Quality over quantity. From material selection and pattern design to cutting, making and final presentation, every detail matters. The artistic director and design team take part throughout product development so that each piece carries the same commitment to quality and design.
A garment worth wearing for years should not exist only for a season. It should hold up to time.
Design and quality are equally important. We study the current mood without following it blindly, using clear silhouettes, considered cuts, good materials and careful making to create clothes with identity that still belong in everyday life.
The pursuit of craft
From one length of fabric to a finished garment, every stage reflects the team's care for quality. We pay attention to materials, structure, cutting and the smallest finishing details.
Precise making allows an idea to become real, while helping a garment retain its texture, shape and ease through long-term wear.
A modern Hong Kong aesthetic
Dongya Botu looks to contemporary fashion while keeping the singular sensibility of Hong Kong. This is not a style that seeks spectacle or follows every international trend. It builds a calm balance between simplicity, ease and refinement.
After years of design practice, this visual language has become a modern Hong Kong aesthetic: practical, current and finished with a precise hand.
We hope to keep creating meaningful value through clothing. Fashion is more than trend; it is a way of living and a form of aesthetic expression.
In the years ahead, we will continue to explore new possibilities while protecting the character of the house, so more people can feel the connection between design, art and life.
Quality over quantity. Design begins with life. This is not only our philosophy, but the direction we continue to follow.
